UZRA BUTT


Uzra butt was a great theatre personality of Indian subcontinent who later migrated to Pakistan and contributed towards Pakistani theater. She came to Pakistan with her husband hameed butt in 1964and settled in Rawalpindi where she assembled a dance troupe, acted on stage from time to time and served Pakistan national council of arts. In 1985 she became the leading lady at AJOKA theatre of Pakistan. Her first play with her group was “chaak chakkar” which resulted in a success. Later on she appeared in many plays like Barri, Dukhini, Dukh Darya, Takey Da Tamasha, Talismati Tata, Teesri Dastak, Kali Ghata, Adhuri and Surak Gulaban Da Mousam and later began chairperson of the group.

She appeared in the play “ek thi nani” with her sister zohra sehgal who did not moved to Pakistan and worked in Indian television for many years. She worked in this play with her sister after 40 years and both of them did a lead role. She celebrated her last 93rd birthday with her family and friends and passed away in June 2010. She was last seen on stage in 2008 and was reported ill after that.

Uzra Butt Early life:

She was born in Rampur, India to a land owning family of Mumtazullah Khan and Natiqua Begum. She was fourth among her seven siblings Zakullah, Hajrah, Zohra (Zohra Sehgal), Ikramullah, Anna and Sabira, and grew up in Chakrata, near Dehradun. She along with her elder sister zohra decided stage as career and joined Uday Shankar's ballet company in 1937 which gave her an international exposure. Zohra did not travel to Pakistan and is considered to be one of the famous Indian actresses who still work even in 90s. She is the all time favorite Indian TV grandmother and has won numerous awards.

Uzra Butt Career:

She became a leading lady in a famous prithvi theatre in 1940s. She joined the bellet troup as a dancer. After gaining much experience and skills, she taught dance to her juniors at the troupe nad upgraded herself by joining Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) in 1944 as an actress. She got her first lead role in a play “zubeda”. Many got impressed by her acting and she became the popular lead role actress. Her sister zohra who was still a part of uday shankar’s ballet troupe joined her in acting. She played a heroine's part in Sakuntala in 1944, partnering her sister in Ghaddar in 1948 and taking the lead role in Kisan and performed in 100 towns and cities all over India.

Uzra Butt Acting Awards:

Uzra Butt received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting (Urdu) in 1994 by the Sangeet Natak Academy. It is India`s National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama. It is the highest Indian recognition given to practicing artists.

It seems that the art of acting was in the blood of this super talented actress and dancer. Her sister ZOHRA SEHGAL is also a brilliant actress and Uzra’s granddaughter is a well known all time favorite Pakistani actresses SAMIYA MUMTAZ.
