ABDUR REHMAN CHUGHTAI is a pride for Pakistan. He was a super talented artist in the entire subcontinent. The specialty in his painting is that he introduced his own unique style of painting inspired by MUGHAL royal style, miniature painting, Art Nouveau and Islamic art traditions. In the past time, there were no cameras. Painting was the common hobby as well as profession of that time. Whether it’s a portrait or an imaginative painting, the painters use to implement their skills such a way that people used to buy their paintings in heavy amounts. The invention of the camera and introduction of digital photography brought down the craze of painting and people started to take photography as their passion. However some people are born with the taste of art. They have great minds, thoughts and perceptions which they express in the form of paintings. ABDUR REHMAN CHUGHTAI was one of them. He was a legendry painter who not only got appraisal and popularity for his exceptional work, but also became a source of inspiration and motivation for many other painters till date. Unlike many other painters, he did not copy the style of famous artists that worked before him; in fact he created his own style which is being copied by many other painters. Besides the Islamic paintings, he painted the Hindu culture and religion too.

Awards and achievement

It is the matter of proud for Pakistan as well as the Muslim community all over the world especially south Asian that he is considered to be “the first significant modern Muslim artist” from south Asia. In 1934, he was awarded with the title of “KHAN BAHADUR”. He was also awarded as “HILAL E IMTIAZ” in 1960 and achieved the presidential medal for “pride of performance” in 1968 by Pakistan. On October 30th 2012, post office Pakistan used his design for the postal stamp. It was his second design. The first design was approved by Quaid E Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah himself.

Abdur Rehman Chughtai Early life

Chughtai was born on 21 September 1897 in Lahore and died on 11 January 1975. He studied at railway technical school where he completed his studies in 1911. He then joined “mayo school of art” to complete his studies. He was from the family of craftsmen. He learnt the art of calligraphy and crafting from his uncle.

After the completion of academic career, he started earning as a photographer and an arts teacher at a school. He eventually became the head of chromo-lithography department at mayo school. Finally, in 1920, CHUGHTAI had his first exhibition which proved to be a great success, after that numerous exhibitions took place in various styles. In his 60 years career, he produced around 2000 watercolors, countless pencil sketching, and around 300 etchings and aquatints. Besides the paintings, he also did calligraphy for different mosques and buildings. He wrote many books and articles on art. He designed book covers, stamps and many other logos. He published his three books which are also counted in his great contributions.

Artists like ABDUR REHMAN CHUGHTAI are not less than a blessing to the mankind. Pakistan is proud to have such a legend as its national. His world is displayed throughout the world. We pray for his successful afterlife.

A good write up about my father but with some mistakes. The Post Office issued stamps with designs by Chughtai many times, not only two times. A number of famous sets by Chughtai are known as well as the 1972 RCD stamps design cover. Thank you for being free of petty politics and prejudice, common to many others.
