Sadequain


To translate the human feelings, social issues and routine matters into images is perhaps one of the toughest arts. It is almost like creating a new world. When we take a look on the culturally rich history of the subcontinent, we find a personality who ruled over the field of art for many years with his matchless and marvellous arts of calligraphy and painting. This renowned and prestigious person was no other than Syed Sadequain Ahmed Naqvi who is shortly referred as Sadequain.
 
The legendary calligrapher and painter was born in Amroha in 1930, inheriting a legacy of art from his family which was well known for the distinguished painters it produces.
 
From the very childhood, Sadequain had an urge to create something different and extra-ordinary. This desire grew up with the passage of time and turned to be a craze and passion that drove the born-artist to paint some of the biggest masterpieces of the world.
 
At the age of 24, Sadequain organised his first ever solo exhibition in Quetta, Pakistan. This was a great breakthrough that ushered a new era of art in the world.
 
Sadequain’s fabulous works of calligraphy and painting fascinated the art lovers around the globe and he started holding exhibitions in Middle East and Europe.
 
During 57 years of his age, the gifted artist accomplished a number of remarkable feats. When he passed away in 1987, he had countless works to his credit.
 
Sadequain was a versatile artist who made various iconic marks in Calligraphy, Painting, Sketching and even writing.
 
As a celebrated calligrapher, he covered different verses of some of the legendary poets of the Subcontinent like Allama Iqbal, Mirza Ghalib and Faiz Ahmed Faiz. By nature, he was more inclined towards Faiz which is why he joined the Progressive Movement.
 
As a great painter, he painted numerous magnificent murals including The State Bank Of Pakistan, The Mangla Dam, Lahore Museum, Aligarh Muslim University, Geological Institute of India, Frere Hall Karachi, Powerhouse at Abu Dhabi and Punjab University Library.
 
Including these prominent ones, Sadequain designed almost 35 murals with each one having unique quality and glorious look.
 
Indeed, Sadequain was the legend who set the renaissance of the Islamic Calligraphy in the Sub-Continent and especially in the post-partition Pakistan.
 
One of Sadequain’s best sketches includes the illustration of the award winning French Novelist named as Albert Camus.
 
Sadequain also produced some of the world’s top class drawing series such as Cobweb Series, Christ Series, Crow Series, Sun Series and Hope Series.
 
Along with illustrating the poetic works of the others, Sadequain himself wrote a number of verses that were later accumulated into a book.
 
For his outstanding and outclass works, Sadequain achieved some glorious awards like Tamghe-e Imtiaz, Paris Biennale, President’s Medal of Honor, Cultural Award and Sitara-e-Imtiaz.
 
Finally, the embodiment of art took off towards the eternal life on February 10, 1987 in Karachi, leaving behind a huge collection of superb and spectacular works. His legacy has always been a source of inspiration for the artists who followed.
 
Despite after 25 years of his death, Sadequain’s name is still glittering on the sky of art and it will remain there till the doomsday.
