Shazia Sikander

Blending the baggage of history with the material of the contemporary world is not an easy task, but Shazia Sikander has accomplished it marvellously. The legendary painter, who opened her eyes in Lahore ---the hub of art---has been at the peak of her profession since many years.

The living artists have produced innumerable masterpiece paintings that have received worldwide recognitions and reputation. Starting from the undivided Subcontinent, Shazia has elegantly encapsulated the crisis of the modern Pakistan and India. She is indeed an artist of all times.

Shazia was born in 1969, the time when Pakistan was passing through the severe phases of transition. After her early education, she opted National College of Arts (NCA) to embellish her inherent artistic skills and learn to evaporate them on the canvas.
The NCA played a significant part in improvising Shazia’s capabilities. Having passed out from this college, she moved to Rhode Island School of Design to get a Masters degree in Fine Arts. This was the place where the born artist learnt high-rate skills and confidence to express her feelings.

Shazia had specialisation in Indian and Persian miniature painting. When she started her professional career, she tried to blend the Mughal art with modern trends. Being a cosmopolitan personality, Shazia has excellently mixed up Hindu and Muslim arts with an objective to create harmony between the two countries who have a lot to share in culture, history and even religions.
Shazia is often quoted as saying, “Such juxtaposing and mixing of Hindu and Muslim iconography is a parallel to the entanglement of histories of India and Pakistan.”

Through her paintings, Shazia has tried her best to bridge the differences that exist between Pakistan and India. She shows on canvas that the natives of the two neighbouring nations are not separate even after partition, rather their heats beat together.
Along with paintings, Shazia has created a number of murals by using the tissue paper like material. Her murals illustrate many significant incidents, installations and personalities.

The gifted artist has held a number of exhibitions of her works both in Pakistan and overseas. She has participated in as many as 20 solo and numerous group exhibitions so far. Shazia is known and venerated across the globe. She has innumerable followers worldwide. For her marvellous and fabulous works, Shazia has received many awards and titles so far. She is one of those living legends who are committed to keep alive the rich history and culture of the Subcontinent.
Currently, Shazia resides in New York. Even in this age, she seems to be quite vibrant and enthusiastic. She keeps creating masterpieces time to time.

The people like Shazia are precious assets for Pakistan and, broadly speaking, for the humanity. We must pray to God that they live long.
If one wants to learn the history in a nutshell, he/she must take a look on Shazia’s paintings and murals. Her contribution to the art of colours and lines is really commendable. Her efforts are worth appreciating and her character is worth loving.
