Reshma- Pakistani legendary folk singer

Reshma was a Pakistani folk singer who did not ever dream of being at such a prestige. She was among the immigrants when Pakistan came into being and moved to Karachi at the time of separation. At that time, she was one month old. She belonged to a backward family and was a converted Muslim. She did not get any education in her childhood instead; she started singing at the shrines of saints in Karachi since she was very young.

At the age of 12, when Reshma was singing at shahbaz qalandar’s shrine in usual routine, she got spotted by a television and radio producer who got impressed by her touching sound and emotions. He decided to make her sing for the country and gave her platform to show off her talent. She became instantly hit from her very first song not only in Pakistan but also in India. India was crazy about her voice and offered also used her voice in many of their movies.

After her successful songs like “DAMA DAM MAST QALANDAR”, “SUN CHARKHAY DI MEETHI MEETHI KOOK”, “VE MAIN CHORI CHORI” AND “ANKHIHYAN NU REHAN DE ANKHIYAN DE KOL KOL” which later India copied as “ANKHYION KO REHNAY DE ANKYION K AAS PAAS” , she became popular in entire Asia and started to perform live not only in Pakistan but also in India.
In 1980s when exchange of artists was allowed between India and Pakistan, she sang for an Indian movie, her all time famous song “LAMBI JUDAI” that made her fans go crazy about her. She had emotions and magic in her pure voice which let her have sitara e imitiaz by government of Pakistan. Her residence was in Lahore. She was among the first passengers who inaugurated the India patient bus service in 2006.

Later in 1980s, she was detected with throat cancer which started deteriorating her health. In 2000s she got very ill and President Pervez Musharraf helped her by paying off her 1 million loans as well as providing her residential plot to secure her future with 10,000 Rupees per month to look after her health. However, change of government changed this as well. In April 2013, she was admitted to doctor’s hospital Lahore in a critical situation where government took all the expenses of her treatment. She became very ill and got in come in October 2013. She left the world melancholic on 3rd November 2013 at the age of 66 years. Her melodious voice will always keep her alive in the hearts of entire nation.
