Tehrik-e-Niswan:

Tehrik-e-Niswan (The women’s movement) is a non-profit, non-political and non-government NGO formed by a group of women in 1979.  Women from different walks of life joined it and became active members of Tehrik-e-Niswan.  “Chaddar and Chardiwari” and “Violence on Women” were the primary issues of talk in the seminars and workshops organizaed by Tehrik-e-Niswan, and soon it became one of the leading NGOs working for women rights in Pakistan.

In start, its emphasis was on organizing seminars and workshops but within just one year, Tehrik-e-Niswan started cultural shows, creative activities and theatre also, to convey its message in attractive way.  It is a pioneer organization which presented women related problems in such an organized manner that women from different areas of the country started becoming its members.

“Dard kay faaslay” meaning distances of pain was the first play which was performed by Tehrik-e-Niswan in a famous shopping center of Karachi for middle class families.  They presented violence of women rights and highlighted problems of women in staged form.

“Sheema Kermani” one of the most famous actress and dance artist was the founder of Tehrik-e-Niswan, she is also an active member of peace movements and women’s movement in Pakistan as well as in south asia.  That’s why peace building is the area of emphasis for Tehrik-e-Niswan.  Their other objectives are, “to create awareness and change moral attitude, to fight obscurantism, to provide a cultural outlet for youth, to promote cultural expression at a community level and to set up a cultural centre for women”.
