Wazir Khan Masjid


 
Wazir Khan Masjid is located in Lahore,Punjab. It is famous because of its faience tile work. It is also be described by “a mole on the cheek of Lahore”. It started constructed around 1634 AD and is complete in almost seven years during the Mughal Emperor “Shah Jahan”. It was built by the governor of Lahore who is also a native of Chiniot named Hakim Shaikh Ilm-ud-din Ansari, he also raised the physician court to Shah Jahan.  He is also being known as the Wazir Khan which means minister in Arabic. Wazir Khan Masjid is located in Inner Lahore and is easily accessed and reached from Dehli gate. This masjid also contains the Qashani tile work which is one famous tile work of Mughal period.

This masjid named Wazir Khan Masjid after the name of the Wazir Khan who is a Governor of Punjab in the reign of Shah Jahan and was also the famous Mughal court physician. He constructs a lot of buildings in the city of Lahore. This is enclosed the Tomb of Miran Badshah and his still lies in the courtyard of the Wazir Khan Masjid. This masjid swaps the Jama Masid. The Historian Stephen said about the mosque that “Mosque itself is virtually impossible to see from outside”, they said this because masjid was covered by the various building.

The mosque is covering the 85mx48m area and is a single aisle and having the 5 bays. The entrance gate of the masjid has the octagonal interior chamber. In this Masjid there are 4 minarets and 32 guestrooms around the sides. It was built by the bricks with the fresco painting and its tile decoration. It reflects the religion concepts which are rare in Mughal mosques. It was the first Masjid which has built the minarets on corners of the courtyard. It also contains the Punjab’s Kasha Kari work. This work is known because the tiles used in the mosque are bringing from the city Kasha located in Persia. The color scheme used is Cobalt, blue, orange, yellow, Green and purple. And its domes are built in Lodi style. It’s a whole package and is reflecting the religious values.  A Pakistani Movie “Khuda Ke Liye” was also used the Masjid for the location to portrays the religious perception in the Islamic society of the Pakistan.
