Shrine Of Bahauddin Zakariya - A Holy Place In Madina Tul Oliya


Multan, also known as Madina-tul-Oliya in Arabic and City of Saints in English, is renowned across the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean for the shrine of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya. People from all over South Asia and across the world gather in thousands at the shrine on every urs, and pray their wishes with the belief that their prayers will definitely be accepted in such a Holy place.

About Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya

With his full name as Al-Sheikh Al-Kabir Sheikh-ul-Islam Baha-ud-Din Abu Muhammad Zakaria Al-Qureshi, the Sufi Saint was also known as Bahawal Haq or Sheikh Bahauddin Zakariya. Born in Kot Kehror, District Layyah of the city Multan in around 1170, Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya was a predecessor of Shahab-al Din Suhrawardi. The Sufi saint wrote poetry based on Sufiism or the spiritual school of thought in Persian language, however, some of his work is also available in Arabic language. He was a preacher of the religion Islam and was known across thousands of miles for his kind nature, his way of preaching and the blessing of the Almighty Lord; Allah on him. He was a saint whose prayers were always accepted by the Lord. Even now, people evidently claim that the wishes which they make in the shrine are accepted.

About the Shrine

With an area of 15.77 square meters, the mausoleum was constructed in 1268 after the death of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya. However, the area outside the major shrine area is expanded to hundreds of meters. The shrine is a square shaped mausoleum with an octagon above the square. The octagon covers half the area of square.Above the octagon is the religious hemisphere of Muslims. People from all around the world visit this shrine every year, and essentially on their tour to Pakistan. The shrine has been uninterruptly visited by the people since its creation.

During the British rule in the 18th century in sub-continent, the shrine of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya was distorted to suppress Muslims of the city of Sufi Saints. However, it produced counter effects on not only Muslims but Sikh, Buddhist and Christian community also, since they too are the strong believers of this shrine's fortunes. The shrine was soon reconstructed.

Urs / Annual Festival

The urs or annual festival of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya is celebrated with zeal and zest every year. The 773rd urs was celebrated with harmony from 19 December to 22nd December 2012. There is a public holiday nationwide in the three days of urs. People visit the religious ceremonies and gatherings, pray in the name of Allah and recite the Holy words of Allah. Muslim, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians and even the Hindu community participate and visits the celestial place, although they pray in the name of their Gods. The government of Pakistan arranges serious security measures in the premises of the shrine. It is said that the shrine is one of the Holy places in Pakistan which have laddered Pakistan's struggle and war against terrorism.
