The word Qawali is derived from an Arabic word “Qaul” meaning “saying”.  Because in Qawali mainly a basic saying is repeated again and again, along with other pieces of religious poetry, that’s why it is called Qawali.   Qawali which is also known as “mehfil-e-samaa” is basically traditional way of singing religious music.  As a major, Qawali is sung in Persian and Indian sub-continent (Pakistan, Indian).  Generally It is performed at suif (saint) shrines or dargahs.
Content of Qawali varies according to the category of qawali and also according to the events and/or festival.  Commonly, Qawali can be consisting of any of the following topics:
  • Hamd: Hamd means a song in praise of ALLAH.
  • Naat: Naat means a song in praise of the holy prophet HAZRAT MUHAMMAD (choicest blessings and peace be upon him)
  • Manqabat: Manqabat means a song in praise of some great sufi saint specially Hazrat ALI (Razi-Allah anho)
  • Munaajaat: Munaajaat means some prayer wish.
  • Marsiya: Marsiya means praise or remembrance of the great sacrifice of Hazrat Imaam Hussain (Razi-Allah anho) in the battle of Karbla.
  • Kafi:  Means a poem consisting of sufi wisdom.
  • Ghazal: Poetry for some beloved one more specifically some religious personality.
